BMI and Nestlé to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions on Farms in Pilot Project

On January 20, 2023, our joint climate protection project with the food group Nestlé was presented at the International Green Week. The project officially started on January 1, 2023, and is expected to run until December 31, 2026.

The primary goal is to identify effective levers that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms. Ideally, this will simultaneously improve farmers’ livelihoods by integrating advanced technologies and sustainable management practices. The aim is to achieve net-zero emissions over the project period through these calculated measures.

A total of two BMI farms were selected for the pilot project, which could not be more different. One is a large organic farm from the new federal states with around 1,400 cows, and the other is a family farm from Baden-Württemberg that supplies VLOG oGT milk to BMI.

We hope to identify practicable emission reduction measures through this project, which we can then recommend to our farmers.

The project is supported by a scientific advisory board and other climate experts, alongside Nestlé.
