Responsibility

As a processor of a natural product, sustainable development is particularly close to our hearts.

Our Standards

Highest quality standards are our commitment. Our processes not only meet legal requirements but are also guided by international regulations and customer demands. This ensures production safety and guarantees that only flawless products enter the value chain.

We take our responsibility towards our customers, especially sensitive consumer groups, very seriously. Our locations are IFS and/or FSSC certified, and our main administration in Landshut is additionally audited annually according to IFS and ISO 22.000.

Our quality standards are based not only on German, European, and international regulations but also on specific country regulations for organic products, such as NOP (USA) or GMP (Organic China). Furthermore, to be exported to certain countries, BMi products must also be kosher and halal certified. Certification is also essential in the B2B sector, as it allows our customers to further process the products.

Our production processes, raw materials, and supply chains are continuously optimized. Certifications by recognized auditing bodies and close collaboration with our suppliers ensure the highest quality.

We take our customers’ concerns very seriously. We thoroughly analyze complaints and implement sustainable improvements as part of our continuous improvement process (CIP). To prevent complaints, we rely on a comprehensive food safety and quality program. Targeted training in hygiene, occupational safety, and HACCP ensures that our employees are optimally prepared for their tasks and can continuously educate and develop themselves.

We focus on resource-efficient manufacturing processes, sustainable material use, and the health of our employees. Our supplier Code of Conduct outlines our requirements for responsible purchasing.

Organic Quality

Delivering high-quality, innovative, and ecological products is our commitment. It’s crucial for us to always stay close to the market and our customers. That’s why we’ve been offering the best organic quality for over 30 years, making us pioneers in the field.

As early as 1993, our cooperative was also among the first manufacturers to enter the production of organic ingredients – and we’ve continuously expanded our offerings since then. We are well-established in this area with diverse processing capacities, a relevant product portfolio, and, importantly, contractually secured raw material availability.

Highlights in our powdered organic range include premium products like organic skimmed milk powder, organic whole milk powder, organic lactose, and demineralized organic whey powder. These are certified according to recognized quality guidelines under the EU Organic Regulation, with some also certified by Bioland, and bear the seal of the association or certification body. We market our organic semi-hard cheese under the brand BMi BioBauern.

Bioland is a key partner for us in the organic sector. All our organic farmers are certified or recognized according to Bioland association guidelines and manage their farms according to the applicable association standards. This includes cultivation with the most closed nutrient cycles possible, mandatory protection of biodiversity, and animal welfare in accordance with the highest standards.

Sustainability

As a cooperative, as a company, as a team, and as individuals, we are aware of our responsibility towards people, animals, and the environment.

At the core of our sustainability efforts is the goal to make a positive contribution towards a more sustainable future for the dairy industry.

The BMi Sustainability Circle shows the areas of action we have identified. It forms the heart of our strategy and illustrates which topics we intend to focus on even more strongly in the future as part of our sustainability initiatives.

As processors of a natural product, sustainable development – particularly in the ecological realm – is very close to our hearts. We believe that only by fulfilling our responsibility can we preserve an environment where future generations can also live in harmony with animals and nature. Our farmers, who are professionally very closely connected to nature, share this view.

All conventional raw milk collected from our member and contract farms comes from dairy cooperatives and associations that consistently forgo genetically modified feed. This allows us to guarantee our customers in Germany and other markets, where GMO-free products are valued, products bearing the VLOG seal or a corresponding “Ohne Gentechnik” (GMO-free) label.

Our organic milk meets the strict standards of Bioland and Naturland, and therefore does not require additional VLOG labeling – further proof of our commitment to the highest quality and sustainable production.

Environmental Protection in Operations

In our plants, we are consistently advancing environmental protection in operations. To achieve this, we continuously work on improving energy consumption, focusing on the energy efficiency of our facilities and optimizing processes and workflows. This includes the fact that we introduced the ISO 50001 energy management system back in 2012 and have been continuously developing it ever since. For us, it was natural to enshrine the careful use of natural resources in our company principles, which form the foundation of our corporate development.

Protecting Resources and the Climate

Economy, ecology, and social responsibility – this triad represents sustainable corporate development and is reflected in our company principles. Sustainable action means not only overcoming challenges but also seizing opportunities for sustainable innovations.

To protect resources and limit environmental impacts, we regularly collect relevant information, which we carefully analyze, document, and communicate. For continuous improvement, we formulate strategic and operational environmental, energy, and climate goals and provide the necessary resources to achieve them.

In 2022, we joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to make our contribution to climate protection clear and comprehensible. Our ambitious climate targets were already validated by SBTi in 2023. We are continuously working on implementing our climate goals and exploring innovative solutions.

BMi constantly reviews and revises its Climate Roadmap and SBTi target setting to continue meeting their requirements.
