A cooperatively organized dairy company with over 70 years of tradition. A high standard of quality and a spirit of innovation continuously drive us forward.
We, Bayerische Milchindustrie eG (or BMi for short), are a cooperatively organized dairy company.
Founded in 1952, the company now looks back on an impressive continuous development and the processing of countless liters of milk and whey.
For over seven decades, we’ve excelled at uniting diverse requirements and interests. We stand out thanks to our differentiated market presence and broad product portfolio. Our high quality standards and innovative drive propel us.
More Than
800
More than 800 employees at five production sites, the central laboratory, and the administrative headquarters give their best every day to deliver exactly the products our customers and partners need – from industrial processors, food retailers, and the gastronomy sector to large-scale consumers.
BMi products are regularly awarded gold and silver medals by the German Agricultural Society (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft, DLG) and have received the “DLG Award for Long-standing Product Quality” multiple times. As a food manufacturer, we are committed to this continuously high level of quality, combined with the readiness to always strive for improvement. Our central laboratory, consisting of the microbiology pathology lab and analytics department, serves as a crucial control point in this regard. It is accredited according to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025:2018 and possesses the expertise to conduct molecular biological analyses of food and environmental samples in the food sector – even for external clients.
We especially want to highlight our producers – around 250 German dairy farmers, primarily from Baden-Wuerttemberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Bavaria. Their daily work and dedication are a central pillar of our company. Out of conviction, and also because more and more people are paying attention to the origin and production conditions of their food, we want to promote animal welfare in agricultural livestock farming. By collaborating with our milk producers, we can influence the housing, treatment, and feeding of the animals. Our goal is to stop sourcing milk from year-round tethered housing in the medium term. Together with our partners, we are working to achieve this goal through the establishment of the QM+ label and the animal husbandry labeling system. This allows us to enable even greater animal welfare. In addition, our farmers produce our organic milk according to Bioland or Naturland standards.
But this is far from the end for us. We are continuously working to shape the future with innovative processes and products. To achieve this, we are investing in the future of our employees and locations. For example, we are rebuilding our Zapfendorf site as part of our Masterplan Ingredients (MPI), and investments are also planned at the Winzer site.
250
Being cooperatively organized means unity in diversity to us. A cooperative thrives on its members, and thus our members and owners are more than just milk and whey suppliers – they are the foundation of our company.
27 milk supply cooperatives, dairies, financing, and investing members are involved in Bayerische Milchindustrie eG. This brings together diverse experiences, interests, and perspectives, with the common goal of achieving an optimal solution for the future and for the benefit of all. An open and honest dialogue is crucially important to us as BMi eG. We actively promote the exchange of information and opinions with farmers through, for example, meetings, surveys, newsletters, and our producer information system. Ultimately, it is a collaboration on equal footing that leads to the sustainable success of a cooperative.
With the sale of our fresh products business, our Bavarian milk supply cooperatives have predominantly remained investing members of our cooperative, but they now deliver their milk to our cooperation partner, Würzburger Milchwerke GmbH.

The Bayerische Milchindustrie eG, following a period of consolidation, now operates at five production sites across Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt. Our main administration is located in Landshut, Lower Bavaria, with our central laboratory situated 17 km away in Wang-Spörerau.
At our production facilities in Jessen, Windsbach, Peiting, Winzer, and Zapfendorf, we manufacture high-quality cheese products and whey-based ingredients. To meet the continuously growing demands of our customers and to maintain and enhance the competitiveness of our products, we consistently invest in our plants.
Key components of this strategy include the strategic developments at our dairy in Jessen, Saxony-Anhalt, the restructuring in Winzer, Bavaria, and our renewal and new construction project, Masterplan Ingredients, in Zapfendorf.
In Jessen, we’ve significantly expanded and increased capacities for a strong cheese production site in recent years. This includes, for example, establishing the technical infrastructure to process the resulting whey directly on-site into ingredients. In Winzer, in 2023, we expanded the site with a lactose line and implemented a wet-dry separation for the three drying towers. Further investments are planned for Winzer. However, our largest upcoming project is our Masterplan Ingredients (MPI), which involves the new construction and expansion of one of Europe’s most modern drying plants in Zapfendorf.
